Description: Vanhamäki Foundation organizes camps and recreational days for different groups around the topics of horse riding, sports and organic farming. Vanhamäki has an organic farm and produces different kinds of canned goods, berry powders and green powders. There is also a forest activity park that is aimed for everyone. During its over 100-year history Vanhamäki Wellness center has operated as a center for poor and disabled people, hospital, home for elderly people and as a youth center. Today the foundation is also running a private childcare institution. Throughout the years the aim has remained the same – operate as the center for wellness and common good.
Type of Work: The volunteers will participate in the work of the farm, and in developing its activities. They can, for example, get acquainted with organic farming and product development and help with the horse stables or in the kitchen. During their free time, the volunteers can go to the sauna, spend evenings by the fire, swim, do sports and go canoeing. A trip to a nearby national park can be arranged and volunteers can organize an international evening for local people. The camp is suitable for families with children over 10 years old who can take part in the daily program with their parent.

(Cancelled) FI-KVT 11.2 SAPAROMÄKI FARM ANIMAL RESCUE 16.-26.6.2020

Description: Saparomäki Farm Animal Rescue is situated in Porvoo, in Southern Finland, 52 km from Helsinki. The name of the place, Saparomäki, translates as a “pig tail hill”. The community members are building a sanctuary for previous farm animals who otherwise would be sent to a slaughterhouse. The Saparomäki sanctuary started its journey in 2019, so there is still a lot of work to be done. Saparomäki will eventually have their own vegan cafe, an exhibition about pig husbandry in modern meat production and spaces for different animals.
Type of Work: Volunteers of the camp are going to help the community mainly with building fences and enclosures for animals and helping with taking care of the animals (chickens and pigs). Please note that the work may be physically demanding and usually done outside. The construction site is not safe environment for small children (under 6 years old). Work will be done together with the other volunteers of the community. Volunteers will also take care of their own cooking.
Study Theme: During the camp the volunteers will learn about ethics in animal keeping; animal rescue and vegan food ideology. It’s also possible to go and visit the beautiful Porvoo old town and its islands.
Accommodation: In shared rooms in a farmhouse with 2 bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen. Volunteers need to bring their own sleeping bags. All cooking will be purely vegan food. Families with children over 6 years old are welcome if living in shared rooms is not a problem.

Notes: Please pay attention to sustainable travel. Flight is not always the only way to achieve the destination. We strongly recommend to set other transportation (trains, buses, ferries) a priority. Do it for the nature and you will see how the journey itself is an adventure!

Description: Food Not Bombs is an international campaign that works in hundreds of cities around the world. Food Not Bombs is trying to inspire the public to participate in changing society by helping concretely and to focus the resources on solving problems like hunger, homelessness and poverty while seeking an end to war and the destruction of the environment. It works by giving out vegetarian meals in public places to anyone in need.
Type of Work: During the camp six meal sharing events around Helsinki will be organized. The volunteer tasks include cooking the meals, taking it to the place of the event, giving it out and cleaning up afterwards. Other tasks include participating in the PR of the meal sharing events and getting food donations. No special skills are needed.
Study Theme: There will be discussions on the history and ideology of the Food Not Bombs campaign, nonviolence, vegetarianism and social problems in Finland.
Accommodation: Volunteers will live at the Peace Station in Helsinki where many peace organisations reside. The accommodation is simple and a sleeping bag is required as volunteers will sleep on mattresses in a shared space. There are bathrooms, kitchen, shower and sauna for the volunteers to use. The food will be mainly the same that is offered in the events around town. All the food is vegetarian.

Requirements: Extra motivation letter is required. Volunteers should express why they are interested in the camp and what they could benefit from participating in it. Volunteers should be interested in antimilitarism, nonviolence and peaceful conflict resolution.

Notes: The accommodation facilities and the nature of the work might be challenging for a person with physical disabilities, but their participation is still welcome. Families can apply to the camp if the lack of privacy in accommodation is not a problem.
(Cancelled) FI-KVT 12.1. VILLAGE LIFE IN KURSU 23.6.-7.7.2020

Description: Kursu is a village of around 220 residents in Lapland, the northern part of Finland. The village is celebrating their 400 years in 2020! The village association of Kursu is organizing different activities and events in the area and promotes issues important for the locals. The aim of the workcamp is to enhance the village surroundings and take part in the activities organized by the village association.
Type of Work: The volunteers will participate in painting, small renovations and maintenance tasks, taking care of the environment and helping with local event arrangements. Volunteers should bring clothes suitable for the outside work and painting and renovation tasks.
Accommodation: Volunteers will stay at a local camping center in shared rooms. In the free days the volunteers will cook for themselves. It is good to bring clothes with long sleeves and trousers as the Lapland summer can be quite cool. There is a possibility to go swimming, hiking or fishing in the nearby areas.

Location: Kursu village in the Salla municipality, Eastern Lapland.
Note: Families are welcome in the workcamp, as long as the kids can follow the work and shared accommodation is not a problem. The camp is not suitable for people with disabilities due to the nature of the work.

Introduction: Herttoniemi Food Co-op is the first community supported agriculture project in Finland. It is a co-op of about 200 members that grows organic vegetables on a 3,5-hectare field in Vantaa, close to Helsinki, with the help of a professional gardener. It is also possible to order other kind of organic and locally grown produce via the co-op. Their aim is to create a ecologically, socially and economically sustainable farming model. For the members of the food co-op it is important to know where their food is coming from and understand wider issues related to food production and consumption (“Think global, act local!”). One aim of the project is to spread knowledge about community supported agriculture in Finland, but the camp is a chance to spread this knowledge more widely.
Type of Work: The volunteers will work on the field with weeding, watering and planting. The work is done outside, so volunteers need to have suitable clothing for the field and rain protection.
Study Theme: Community supported agriculture and urban gardening as means for future food production. A study trip to Helsinki’s urban gardening sites and community gardens will be organized.
Accommodation: The volunteers will sleep in shared rooms and have shared bathrooms at a local school. They will have mattresses on the floor, but own sleeping bags are needed. Some of the meals are provided for the volunteers, but in weekends and morning/evening the volunteers will shop ingredients and cook their meals themselves.
During weekends and evening volunteers can visit Helsinki or other nearby locations, there is also possibility to go swimming and visit a local national park.

(Cancelled) FI-KVT 13.1 TRADITIONS, NATURE AND GARDENING IN ÄIJÄLÄ 12.-20.7.2020

Description: Äijälä Family Home is situated near Jyväskylä in Central Finland. The community’s aim is to support its residents and other clients in their everyday life and life management. The community works with organic gardening and it has a charming old farmhouse which has been renovated to be a home for disabled people. Äijälä Family Home also offers supportive work activities for long-term unemployed people and preserves traditional culture and working methods. Äijälä has been hosting KVT workcamps since 1980.
Type of Work: The workcamp is organized together with a summer camp for disabled people and the volunteers will help the disabled participants in activities such as games, crafts, gardening and little nature excursions. The volunteers will also work in the kitchen and help with some house chores. Work will be done in a spirit of cultural exchange together with the residents and other workers of the community.
Study Theme: Friendship and co-operation across social borders; volunteers and disabled people working together.
Accommodation: In shared rooms in a 200-year-old wooden farmhouse, the main building of the farm.

FI-KVT 11.6 SUSTAINABLE FOOD LOCALLY AND GLOBALLY 24.8.-8.9.2020

Introduction: Elonkierto is an agricultural exhibition park, where visitors can learn about Finnish agriculture, how agricultural research is done and how it is applied in the natural environment. The park is created for the whole family with plenty of things to see and do and in the summer time there are different events taking place. During the camp the volunteers have a chance to learn about sustainable food production and understanding the ecosystems linked to it both locally and globally.
Type of Work: The volunteers will help with the farm work and gardening in Elonkierto. They participate in organizing a FoodBizz 3030 hackathon event for youth, helping with workshops and evaluation of the event. Volunteers also help with both preparations and the running of a children’s agricultural exhibition and finally cleaning up after the exhibition. They have opportunity to also create some program for the children’s agricultural exhibition. Volunteers should be prepared to work outside majority of the time and have suitable clothes for that. Families are welcome with kids over 6 years old as long as they can keep up with the parents.
Study Theme: Sustainable food systems
Accommodation: Volunteers will stay with local families (within close distance) in smaller groups, so the accommodation will be shared and volunteers will have beds, toilets and showers at their use. Volunteers should bring their own sleeping bags if they want to go visit local nature parks. Breakfast and lunch will be served to the volunteers and dinner and snacks they make themselves.
In the free time there are several possibilities for seeing local nature parks, going berry picking or mushroom picking, trying sauna and swimming and much more.
